What is the maximum possible number of British dominions in North America?

Just as the title says. What is the maximum possible number of British dominions in North America if the AWI fails? I think it's up to fifteen on the continent, and up to four in the Caribbean, as in this map (ignore everything except North America and the Caribbean):

  • Newfoundland (OTL pre-1949 Dominion of Newfoundland)
  • Quebec (OTL province of Quebec, plus Baffin Island)
  • Nova Scotia (OTL Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, plus northern Maine up to the maximum OTL British claim line in said area)
  • Canada (OTL Canada from Ontario on west, excluding the Oregon Country)
  • New England (OTL, minus OTL British-claimed areas)
  • Columbia (OTL New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania)
  • Virginia (OTL pre-1789 Virginia, Maryand, Delaware, and the Carolinas)
  • Georgia (OTL pre-1800 Georgia and Florida)
  • Louisiana (southern part of Louisiana)
  • Iowa?/Missouri?/??? (northern part of Louisiana)
  • Ohio (OTL US Northwest Territory)
  • Oregon?/Cascadia? (OTL Oregon Country)
  • Tejas (OTL Republic of Texas, minus claimed areas of Mexico)
  • California (OTL California and Nevada)
  • Alaska (OTL Alaska, plus the Komandorski Islands)
  • Caribbean? (Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and OTL British Caribbean territories)
  • Yucatan (Yucatan peninsula)
  • Honduras (OTL Honduras)
  • Nicaragua (OTL Nicaragua; may be combined with Honduras)

Early POD. Dominion ends up becoming the name for any royal or imperial structure or division outside of Britain. In North America you'd have thousands.

Hmmmm...

The OTL Dominion of New England took in everything north of the Mason-Dixon line, and perhaps an equivalent 'Southland' dominion everything south of that. Derp. We would likely see these extend to the Mississippi River due to western claims of the colonies.

I should point out the Maritimes would likely be part of New England since they didn't exist de-facto at the time but 'Nova Scotia' was added on paper to the Dominion.

South Carolina and Virginia were very different power centers and it's highly unlikely they'd be grouped together. I'd imagine most of North Carolina would fall under Virginia's sway, while South Carolina would sweep up the remnants south of the marshy area, as well as having Georgia under its sway. OTL Mississippi and Alabama would then be another dominion.

I also can't imagine the British naming a dominion after a Spanish explorer. Before US independence, it was always John Cabot who was given credit for finding the mainland. I imagine the dominion you're talking about here would just be called New York.

I think Ontario and Michigan are likely to be part of the same dominion.

The Caribbean and Central America are unlikely to become dominions, with their very small white populations. However, if you're going for maximum, the British could certainly grab large parts of northern Mexico.

I also expect the names to be less Indian and more British sounding - consider thier names for planned colonies in Kentucky included Westsylvania, Transylvania, and Vandalia.

I also agree with Socrates - they are more likely to nab Northern Mexico than Central America.

You might get the Southern Cone too.

It completely depends on the PoD. We have the historical Dominion of New England in America in the 1680s (current NE+NY+NJ), which might have survived if William III had drowned instead of coming to England. If that had resulted in a viable kind of confederation of colonies, then there might have been other dominions. But the same time, the colonial history would have been so much altered, that New France might stay French, so definite answers are impossible.

Socrates, that was a genuinely excellent post.

Why, thank you.

This has made me notice that this isn't separate on the map. I think it's highly unlikely Virginia can hold on to those west of the Appalachians, so this would be another dominion.

I've often wondered about this. Apparently the British had long thought it would make a good settler colony, but I wonder whether they could hold it. I also wonder what the North American colonies would think about grabbing the place. Presumably the financial interests in New England and New York would quite like it as a gateway into South American markets.
