What is the fate of Egypt if Alexander survives?

Hi guys, I'm curious what you believe would happen to Egypt if Alexander the Great survives to establish a dynasty. Would the Ptolemies still be a regional power of the area? Would Alexander set his capital in Egypt, Babylon or return to Macedon? For the purposes of this POD assume Alexander survives but does not continue his campaign into India. I might work that into the timeline later but for now I could mostly use some ideas for what happens in the Nile valley. Thanks!

I forget who Alexander appointed satrap of Egypt. It was a Greek if memory serves. The Ptolemies certainly won't take it-Special circumstances forced Perdiccas to grant Ptolemy Egypt.

Alexander wouldn't continue his campaign into India anyway but instead at the very least, into Arabia.

Cleomenes of Naucratis was placed in charge of Egypt; he was very efficient at collecting money, but more than a little immoral in doing so - Alexander initially planned to remove him, but it seems that he largely forgave Cleomenes for his crimes after Cleomenes promised to help him grieve Hephaestion by building giant memorials for him.

It's kind of hard to determine the fate of Egypt without determining the fate of Alexander's entire empire. Other than Cleomenes probably being replaced at some point, and Egypt being a focus of any civil wars that might start up after Alexander's death, it's kind of hard to say. The Ptolemies probably will not end up in power in Egypt though - maybe if Ptolemy is placed as satrap of some other conquest of his they'll have their own "kingdom", but it probably won't be Egypt, if that does become the case.

Just went through the wiki article on Cleomenes. I dunno about anyone else, but based on that brief description and assuming he stays in power for any great length of time he strikes me as the sort of fellow who would inspire an armed uprising among the people he was oppressing and swindling. Which is not a bad starting point for ideas.

Also, why DID Perdiccas give Ptolemy authority in Egypt? I can't seem to find any information about his specific motives on the matter.

Ptolemy stayed loyal to him when (the name escapes me) rebelled and tried to stage a coup essentially. He wanted Egypt and Perdiccas had little choice. BUt he gave him Egypt on the condition he kept Cleomenes in power. Ptolemy accepted but went back on that.
