Looking back, it is somewhat amazing that Ireland remained tied to Britain for so long.

When during the late 18th century was Ireland's best shot at seperating themselves from Britain?

Early American Revolutionary War? - Imagine if France and Spain managed to land their armada and the French in Ireland instead of dancing about the English Channel. Note that only in 1778 were reforms initiated to allow Catholics into the power structure, namely the army.

French Revolutionary Wary? - More than one effort to incite insurrection in Ireland (mostly half-assed) were attempted by the French. Poor weather stopped the incompetant French more than the Royal Navy.

7 Years War? - I don't recall reading of any significant attempts at rebellion by the Irish or to incite it by the French.

Feel free to hazard an opinion.
