what if

What do you mean by destroy? Also why aren't you including Syria and the expeditionary forces?

Edit: are you including the Sinai peninsula, Gaza, and the West Bank in the destruction?

Define “destroy.”
Are you talking about the complete destruction of the IDF and occupation of Israel?

The US jumped to DEFCON 3 in OTL, so they're not letting Israel fall. If you create a scenario where everything has collapsed on the Israeli lines and the situation looks hopeless, I'm assuming that Meir would just use their nuclear stockpile to stall the advancing troops until reserves could get back in position.

Some on here have speculated that the Aswan High Dam would be nuked, which would be problematic for the 90% of Egyptians that lived along the Nile, but you wouldn't need to have that level of counter-value overkill to provide a sufficient deterrent.

So, I guess I'm wondering what POD changes this.

How would Egypt and others deal with the Israeli's Samson Option? The Israelis would have undoubtedly employed their 13 twenty kiloton nuclear devices before being overrun. Would or could the Egyptians and Syrians continue the fight after being struck with some of the nukes?

EDIT: This paper has a good discussion of Israel's nuclear weapons, including some of the actions taken during the Yom Kippur War.

Also, how does the USSR interpret the nuclear strikes? Do they understand these were built by Israel and are not under U.S. control? If not, will they believe Kissinger (Nixon being passed out drunk that evening).

50-50 chance that within a few hours, me and the rest of civilization have a very bad day.

there's the small problem that Egypt wasn't really planning on 'destroying Israel' in the YKW... their plan was to grab both sides of the Canal, let Israel bang their heads on their missile wall, and then come to terms with Israel to get the Sinai back. Which almost worked, it all came crashing down when Egypt sent forces outside the missile box to help Syria out. Speaking of which, Syria came a lot closer to getting forces into Israel proper, coming within a hair of breaking out of the Golan Heights. Egypt never came close to getting into Israel itself...

If Israel lets the nukes fly, then the war is over. For the Arab coalition anyway.
My parents were upper-middle-class Democrats who were becoming more and more disenchanted with the Democratic party and going more to the right. Each night at dinner we discussed some political issue or happening in the world and I remember when that war happened they were both, which really surprised me, okay with Israel using atomic bombs on the Egyptians and the syrians. The interview was kind of when Israel was formed there was a reasonably fair or not a lot division and all the Arabs had done up to that point in their View was try to get rid of Israel and still living with them and unfortunately they both passed away or I would ask them what they thought of the blowing up of the dam my brother who's 5 years younger says he remembers him saying that would be a good way to stop having problems with Egypt. I think I would have remembered that plus my parents while going more conservative we're still on the liberal side. And in school school we discussed it a little and if you read between the lines there were a lot of teachers and other parents who in the midwest felt that would have been a fair option. Of course these parents including mine were born in the late 30s so they went from the world of Total Security to World War2 both were still in grade school do the 1950s when the government convinced everybody that nuclear war was imminent in fact my mother mentioned one time that her home at class for three years in high school was how to make a fallout shelter home and make nutritious meals with what you saved. The only reason I went into detail about their past was there going to be a lot of people that is horrible that's disgusting one of my mother's earliest memories when she was five was being waking up in the middle of the night by Air Raid Sirens which was a drill and taken to the neighborhood bomb shelter. How mind you this is in the midwest Columbus Ohio but people had a real fear after Pearl Harbor

okay...so you think Israel won't use nukes?

No I think they will and I don't think the Russians are willing to trade Moscow for Egypt or Syria

It's not trading Moscow for Damascus: it's guessing whether the next 10 minutes are "use 'em or lose 'em" time.

Brezhnev and Nixon just got multiple confirmed NUCFLASH alerts. Nixon is claiming the United States had nothing to do with them, which is going to sound like utter bullshit. Or worse, Kissinger is saying Nixon is "unwell" and can't come to the phone right now (because he is in fact upstairs drunk, not already beneath Mt. Weather; but that's gonna be hard to believe). Yeah...

[ Edit: Soviet doctrine in 1973 was launch on warning, so Brezhnev might not even bother making a phone call. ]

I grew up just outside the fireball radius of Ellington AFB/Johnson Space Center, and inside the 5 PSI radius of various oil refinery targets. Hopefully it'll all go down while I'm asleep.
