What if: There was no internet?

Without youtube or wikipedia, a lot of obscure pop culture would be gone forever (ie, short-lived tv shows).

Just ISOT the world to about 1990, when the average person had no idea about the 'interwebs', and that would answer the question.
If you mean get rid of even the military and scientific uses of computer networking, then that's an even more interesting scenario.

Hey! Great News! Look what I got in the mail today :)

I would never have had a girlfriend and would still be a virgin now.
Either no fanfiction, or very limited fanfiction that only a handful of people can see.
I'd have to buy expensive CDs that start getting scratched within weeks.

How would the world be affected if there was no internet?

Could this affect:

  • Politics
  • Music
  • Culture
  • Awareness of certain causes (and the fad-like status they had)

Should be moved to ASB.....

Anyhow, I don't think we'd recognize most pop culture after, say, 1992 or so. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.....

2. Agreed.

3. Then don't scratch them. :p

Remember, no internet doesn't mean no progress anywhere else.

It's not like there would be nothing but square cars and hair product seen out the window.

Computers would still be more powerful, but, they would reflect different priorities, etc.

The POD of this should be before Arpanet is established then that would mean more slower development of Computing and no global networking, In an 80's POD, I think the Internet could had been more of a communication network and an alternative to the telephone not an information superhighway and things like Newsgroups, e-mail, filesharing, VOIP and Chat being the only activity in the internet instead of browsing, I think in the late 80's and around the time when the Web was established there became popular alternatives to the Web like WAIS and Gopher, had the Web never been invented I think either WAIS or Gopher would had been popular, I think a Gopherweb could make the Internet more controlled by corporations.
