What if there was an Earthquake in Constantinople in 1167?

When did the first two earthquake storms [eastern Med] hit Constantinople [ 6~700. & 13~1400:confused:] --third storm is due to hit sometime in the next 20 years.
Any way the ATL 1167 Earthquake would do about the same damage as the OTL second one.

It could be catastrophic for the Byzantines if the earthquake cracks those walls.

Walls of Constantiinople were damaged once after an earthquake during the reign of Theodosius II in 447 AD but he quickly repaired them and added them 11 bands of brick 40cm each brick in order to strengthen their cohession against earthquakes... the 740 earthquake made some significant damage though but it wasnt that bad since Walls were repaired in no time... Plus the part of Walls that fell was the old Wall of Constantine now inside the city while Theodosian Walls didnt suffered any substantial damage...
Constantinople suffered many earthquakes after that but none of it made significant damage to the Walls...
Fortifications started collapsing after the great earthquake of 1509 but the Walls were virtually abandoned by that time...
As for 1167 there could be damages in buildings etc. but not walls...

Just to amplify, look at the photo below - the bands of brick that are characteristic of Byzantine architecture in Constantinople are to "earthquake-proof" structures. The brick is more pliant and operate like "springs" to preserve the integrity of the structure.

Cool pic-- did you take it yourself?

It probably happened plenty of times. The city is near a major fault line.

Indeed... But only 2 earthquakes caused significant damages to the Walls... 447's earthquake destroyed much of the fortifications but Theodosius II repaired them quickly as a Hunnic invasion by Attila was imminent (sic)... The nobility of Constantinople helped the Emperor in raising the money needed to repair the Walls in no time by selling all their belongings (even furniture)... Theodosius II seeing that the walls were weak in cases of earthquake he strengthened them by adding several bands of brick...
The second earthquake that damaged Walls was the 26/02/740 earthquake but it caused minor damage (almost insignificant) to the Theodosian Walls... Only parts of the Old Constantinian Walls collapsed but they were inside the City so there was no danger in that...
