In spring of 1922 was sent to Athens a Soviet envoy, who some predicting what might have been Karl Radek, to carry through John Kordatos a proposal to the Greek government. The Soviets said that they wanted to intervene in Greek-Turkish conflict in order to keep the Greeks in Ionia with autonomy. Although they suppoted Kemal's movement with guns and money at start they always were suspisious about his motives they feared that there is a danger the coservative forces within Turkey will prevailed and deals of Kemal with Britain and France increased their suspisions. Also proposed a peacekepping force in the autonomous region of Ionia by countries that didn't took part in WW1
Writes J. Kordatos, the Soviet envoy noted: "That is why we want to stay the Greeks in Asia Minor, not empty sentimentality, but a realistic vision for tomorrow and the next day. Minorities in Turkey stood by the side of a barrier into the total Islamisation of the Balkans and the East and the other became the source that fueled the national liberation movements of the peoples of the Balkans in 1770 until today. "
