What if the USSR had attacked Germany first?

In this situation, a lot of Americans would be tempted to take Truman's advice: support the Germans if it looked like the Russians were winning and support the Russians if it looked like the Germans were winning, and thereby cause Hitler and Stalin to bleed one another white.

This said, hard to believe that with the Red Army 'liberating' Warsaw and the Brits relieved of air attacks, the U.S. would start supporting the Nazis. They could well stay out of the war, but I'm not seeing an invasion of Canada!

When does it happen? If it is after September 3, 1939 then the British and French express joy, at least short term. The Red Army was weak in the fall of 1939, but the Wehrmacht was pretty much a paper tiger as well. No way it can handle the Red Army, even a weak version, the British and the French simultaneously. The Red Army attacking might also give the Paris government enough spine to actually advance into Germany (where it was faced by exceptionally weak, mainly reserve, formations) before the BEF gets ashore.

Medium/long term? France & the UK might regret having the Red Army on the Rhine.

If it happens before September 3?

German air reconnaissance in the Spring of 1941 that had ventured into the Western portion of the Soviet Union would have noticed the extra concentration of Soviet troops and equipment building up and German Intel would likewise noticed the increased radio chatter among the Soviet units at the border and in the hinterland to gain extra information of new Soviet formations getting new infusion of troops, equipment and supplies...
