What if the US actually adopted the FN FAL

During the 50s and the formation of NATO, the US was supposed to adopt the Belgian-made FN FAL in exchange for deployment of the 7.62mm NATO round as standard. But instead, the US would choose to break their part of the deal and use the M14. So what happens if the Americans actually keep their word and adopt the FN FAL as their standard issue service rifle.

The M16 is brought into service to replace the aging M1/M2 Carbines and M3A1 Grease Guns.

Some will say in the '70s, that only if more of the troops in SEAsia had a lighter, handier wapon than the FN Rifle, combat in Vietnam would have been more to the advantage of US and ARVN troopers, being able to carry more of the lighter ammunition to firefights

Pretty much what happened with the Aussie and British armies - (the AR15 / M16 replaced the Stirling / F1 SMG as the scout / patrol weapon) and ITTL eventually becomes a chosen 'patrol' weapon and ultimately completely replaces the FN FAL in elite units.
