Just as an aside: After the attack on the Liberty, the 6th fleet launched a strike package with the intention of ATTACKING the Israeli bases that facilitates the air and naval attack. Per standing policy the carrier launched its Alert Five strike aircraft. Fortunately, before they got too far from the ship someone figured out that, due to the position of the carrier, the Alert Five package was part of a strategic exercise the USS America was running at the time and the strike aircraft were armed with NUCLEAR WEAPONS. The U.S. came within about 40 minutes of nuking Israel.

So how would the world react if there the United States had not stopped the planes in time how would the world react to this especially since this is in living memory of the Holocaust how strained would relations be between America and Israel would Israel they retaliate with their own nukes

Why would Israel kill millions of Egyptians in response to a strike by the US?

What is it with people and Israel nuking the Aswan Dam? The only thing worse is Israel nuking Damascus (which would contaminate most of its water).

The original "inspiring" thread is in post-1900 and has been commented on (multiple times) by CalBear, so i don't see why it needs to be moved?


As to the OP, are we just assuming that the pilots and crews of the strike package will mindlessly follow orders and nuke a base in a friendly nation? Didn't nuclear missions require higher level clearance, or were nukes just another option open to the commander of the fleet who happened to have them at the time? OTL, Vice-Admiral William I. Martin recalled the jets pretty quickly and everyone up to the President believed and accepted the Israeli claims of mistaken identity, so for this to go "hot" would require worse US-Israel relations pre-incident? Were there any other incidents before the Liberty that could have escalated tensions?

One nuclear bomb isn't going to contaminate an entire area of 8500 square miles.

5. Detonating a dirty bomb into the Jordanian river water table has unknown effects. I cannot flatly agree that a bomb detonated into the headwaters would have minimal effect downstream. An airburst over Damascus could lead to fallout drifting east southeast and WW III. So more than 8700 sq mi. could be affected by subsequent events.

More like "Egypt and Syria now share a border". None of Egypt, Syria, or especially Jordan ever had any actual interest in forming a Palestinian state. We can see that Egypt's "Palestinian government" was a farce and Syria's treatment of its own local Palestinians.

While the idea is scary, LBJ and the rest of the leadership would harp on the Israel attack on the Liberty. Remember there were two attacks one by ships and one by air....

No one will buy a nuke as proper response for an attack on a spy ship. An airstrike on some airfields or something, sure. Sinking the ships responsible, absolutely. But a nuke? C'mon. Not even the hardest core Liberty conspiracy theorists would buy that as appropriate.
