What if the Third French Republic collapses in the 1900s.

So, I just heard that France was really unstable during this time. If it collapsed into civil war or something, how does the world react? What does Germany do? What happens to the French colonies? Where do refugees from the collapse go to? Etc.

It did have quite a powerful labor movement and multiple unstable governments in the early 20th century.

More importantly there is the ever present memory of 1789 and of course 1848 and the commune. Have a French communist civil war and my God the European ruling classes will be shaking in their sleep.

Wouldn't the European ruling interfere in a French communist civil war, I mean it would be bloody, but I wouldn't think that France would be able to have a repeat of the French revolution and subsequent Napoleonic wars. Could they? Wait no, industrial weapons. Machine guns. My God if people hate communism enough, would proto Nazis try to commit genocide on a Communist France in order to avoid another Napoleon.

In the early 20th century you have to understand socialism and communism weren't reviled, it was a dream a lot of people truly believed in including France. It's not about another Napeleon the reason why the European states would intervene is to ensure their own heads aren't hanging from lampposts as well. The fear of socialist revolution in Europe was very real.

Wekk, what I meant about Napoleon is that France is going under another revolution, so it would be similar to the previous century. And my thinking was that the colonial empires would make a simplistic "rational" assessment that ugly revolutions are inherent in the French "race", and since these revolutions would be hated by conservative Europe, the elites would try snuff it out in it's cradle and stop them for good.

I am generally pessimistic on how the late 19th century pre ww1 colonial empires are in terms of having mercy and not being genocidal.
