What If The Tejero Cortes Coup Succeeded?

23 Feb'81, a nutter, Antonio Tejero in a mad hat storms into the Cortes and shoots a few bullets in the air! He is roundly condemned and I think the coup is over in 18 hours! King Juan Carlos quickly calls fo rdemocracy to be restored! Maybe if this clown and a few of his fellow conspirators drew blood things might have been different, Thank God that did not happen and Spain is a democracy sdespite EU meddling in their affairs!

It wouldn't. It was one of the more pathetic coups in history, and actually was good for Spain because they realized that the old order was gone, gone, gone.

Indeed, it was also very good for the monarchy. To the extent that some of the more... ah, conspiracy minded individuals started talking about how it was likely that Juan Carlos I had either planned or encouraged the whole affair so that he could make his famous televised speech so as to secure the House of Bourbon's position.

And what's so mad about the Guarda Civil's tricornios?

The coup only looked "weird" because of the leader Tejero looked like something from a movie.

He proclaimed to the the MP's to sit down and wait as a very important military person would come and address them shortly. That person has never been found.

Rumours again: It was Juan Carlos, the one Franco called "Juan the Brief" meaning he would not sit there forever.

Tejero was absolutely not alone in this. The MP's feared they would be shot as Franco had some of them shot.

There are still many interesting aspects of that affair to dismiss as a "clown coup".
