What if the Soviet Union didn't fall

Imagine a world in which Gorbachev holds the USSR together, but the government is a Republic. The United Soviet Socialist republics becomes the united states of Soviet republics.

I'm thinking of doing a timeline that evolves around a still united (but democratic) USSR and a rebounded economy. Their are also still many communist ideals and regulations that keep the Russian economic collapse & Monopolies of the OTL from happening.

What is your opinion of this ATL guys

You have to figure out how to overcome the strong sense of nationalism among the non Russians.

What about Gorbachev's Union State plan in which the other SSR's are independent, but united under the Union (basically like America before the Constitution), Pretty much becoming a federation.

From what I understand (someone correct me if I'm wrong), that came very close to fruition but was derailed by the hardliner coup. If you can prevent the August Coup from happening, you'll most likely see the majority of SSRs sign on and create the new Union.

However, there's no telling what kind of politics, especially economic politics, will emerge from that. You'll probably avoid Yeltsin's disastrous shock doctrine, but I doubt that you will see any continuation of command economics. There will probably still be a depression, though not as severe.
