What if the Sassanids were able to hold Palestine.

According to Wikipedia, the Sassanids were aided in their brief conquest and occupation of Palestine by local Jews. Civilian control was given to the Jews and plans were made for construction of the Third Temple. Assuming the Sassanids can keep the Byzantines out of Palestine what are the long term effects on Judaism and it's relationship with Christianity and Zoroastrianism. Do the Crusades start earlier than OTL? I'm assuming Islam doesn't arise or conquest aborted by a more powerful Sassanid empire.

Can't imagine why there would be an earlier crusade. The Arab conquest of Palestine didn't lead to an immediate crusade in any sense - there was no way the western states at the time had the power projection to even dream about such a thing in their most wild fantasies.

Now, that aside; I really do like the question. The problem, of course, is I'm not sure what would force Byzantium to the table and get them to acknowledge the loss of Palestine if they also continue to hold Anatolia. So, what you're really looking at is a scenario where the Persians take Palestine, Egypt, Syria and Anatolia. And that's a somewhat different kettle of fish entirely.

Agreed, the Sassanids would at least need to control the entire Levant and have the Avars keep the Byzantines busy in order to consolidate their control of the area. Assuming that occurs, which I don't think is far fetched, the Sassanids would have a substantially larger Christian population to rule over. I assume this could be resolved through allowing local autonomy and playing different Christian sects against each other, which is how Persians traditionally dealt with non-Iranic populations. That aside, how does Judaism and Jewish culture develop now that it has at least local control over it's historical land for the first time in centuries, and with the strong possibility of a Third Temple being built? Do we see a return of the diaspora? Increased anti-Semitism by Christian groups?

The thing about a restored Temple and Jewish Kingdom is that the Jewish religious authorities would probably declare someone the Moshiach. Either the Persian Shah who secured the area and allowed the restoration, similar to how the Jews regarded Cyrus after the Babylonian captivity, or the lucky fellow who gets crowned King of the Jews. Either way that will not go down well with the various Christian Churches. It's one thing for the Jews to not acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah it's another for them to claim someone else is.
