What if the Panopticon was made?

Tony Jones did this in his excellent Cliveless World timeline. It had quite a large effect on that world when introduced. Take a look.

It was an interesting idea, but I think Tony made too much of it. It's a bit of a leap from a prison where constant surveillance is used in an attempt to reprogramme career criminals, to a modern surveillance society where everyone is watched.

Hmm, I wonder if someone could spin that into "New Labour treats everyone like criminals"? :D

Stranger things have happened in OTL.

It's easy for those of us who do read The Daily Telegraph to spot you chaps who don't. They've been suggesting that exact view for about the length of Blair's premiership less a day. :D

Ah well Foucoult uses the Panopticon as a metaphor for survielance in today's world. Since big brother is becoming more powerful how would it affect a society?

What if surveilance was more advanced then our current standards?

Ah thing with panopticon is it induces paranoia, which brings about fear and with fear you can control others.

Thank you for the links it was an interesting read.

"Bentham devoted a large part of his time and almost his whole fortune to promote the construction of a prison based on his scheme. After many years and innumerable political and financial difficulties, he eventually obtained a favourable sanction from Parliament for the purchase of a place to erect the prison, but in 1811 after the King refused to authorize the purchase of the land, the project was finally aborted."

So what if the Panopicon was made in 1811 and not just one but it became a replacement for current prison, factory and school systems just like the way invoked by Michel Foucault?

What is a WI? This relates back to my original question about what would have happened if it was made back in 1811.

Yes, the designs can be seen in later prisons. However, I'm curious to know if the design could have taken hold on society in a more physical manner as Foucault associated.
