What if the Dominion of Newfoundland had remained independent of Canada

For godsakes if a nation must be re-partrited as a colony again that may show signs of you lacking the ability of looking after yourself.
It's like moveing back in with your parents.....

They'd eventually be part of Canada. The Depression showed that NF could not survive on its own.

Actualy it was WWI that left them in the dire straights they were in, the depression only made thing worse. (google Royal Nefoundland Regiment)

Though in 1949 Britain only gave them two choices Colony or Canada... (the Devil or the Deep Blue Sea) Some choice.

Newfoundland was not viable economically on it's own back then, it is no more now, and Britons were not really in the mood to cede it to USA. What other choice did Newfoundland have?

Although I should admit that independent (or British) Newfoundland opens couple of interesting opportunities for Cold War. Gander was favourite airport for Trans-Atlantic flights from the ComBlock to USA/Cuba...

I can certainly believe that Newfoundland wasn't viable as an independent entity in 1949. Was the climate between Truman and Attlee (?) at the time such that joining the US wasn't an option--or was the US even interested? Granted, had Newfoundland joined the US, it would have challenged Mississippi, Arkansas, and West Virginia as one of the poorest states, and it also would have challenged Wyoming as the least populated, but still...

What if Newfoundland joins the UK? Is that feasible?

How about this: 1949 - Newfoundland remains a colony. The idea of eventually joining the UK is discussed, but doesn't happen, yet.

In the 1950s, Newfoundland situation triggers enough butterflies that Malta does join the UK (this was in IOTL considered as an option and nearly happened). Meanwhile Canada progresses onwards, and reaches its own internal delicate constitutional arrangements with Quebec - admitting Newfoundland would mess up those arrangements, so the idea of joining Canada is shelved.

And eventually joining the UK is the way out of the impasse for Newfoundland

The UK could annex Newfoundland into their country give it representation in Westminster. That could be a unique situation.

Come on: Newfoundland could have easily remained a colony, and could have easily gained independence a few years later. All sorts of countries were born in the latter twentieth century, economically viable or not.

Newfoundland was mostly in dire straits, yes, because of the First World War - when all sorts of potential leaders were picked off by Germans. Perhaps doing better in that could have allowed them to, at least, survive the Great Depression. World War II could kickstart the economy - not by too much, obviously, like other countries, but enough to give them a boost, and enough to keep them viable, if poor.

Well, the Falklands have had some economic boom, though being a British colony. It's as agricultural as NL.
