What if the Cold War just...fizzled out?

Kennedy? "Bear any burden, meet any hardship" Kennedy? I was under the impression that the general consensus among alt-historians was that Kennedy probably would have continued to escalate: the opposite view is most popular the Martyred Saint Kennedy crowd and those who feel Oswald Did Not Act Alone, which admittedly does not necessarily invalidate the argument, but does make one a bit suspicious.

You mean there's more than one of me?;)

Agreed. I'm of the opinion that Kennedy likely would've continued involvement in Vietnam. You could even imagine some sort of denete between the Soviet Union and the United States leading to a stoppage of Soviet aid to Vietnam. Then, China steps in to fill the gap and becomes the flag-bearer of international communism. You get a ATL where the Soviet Union becomes what China did in OTL.

It'd be freaking weird, but unfortunately, I think the end result is a simple replacement with China as the big communist bogeyman. In OTL, even with Nixon's overtures towards China, we saw the Chinese still try to sway other countries towards their brand of communism. If the Soviet Union and the United States reach some sort of agreement, I think China would step right into the vacuum as part of their prestige race with the Soviet Union, rather than any sort of antagonism with the United States.

It'd probably develop into an antagonism with the United States in a short period of time, though. The communist ideology and America's history with China seem to make that pretty clear.

We are talking about the same John Kennedy who failed to topple Castro and was forced to yank missiles from Turkey to get the Soviet missiles out of Cuba, right?
