You know, I did actually hear on one occasion that before Jerusalem became the capital of Israel, the Sheriff kept his harem on Temple Mount. The association is not atypical (but the etymology spurious).

Sherif is just the modern pronunciation of the classical adjective sharīfun "noble", with imāla (raising) of the a. "Sheriff", on the other hand, is a contraction of "shire reeve" and has nothing to do with the Arabic word.
