What if the Brazilian Republican coup d'etat fails?

What if the Republican coup of 1889 fails? Pedro II is not long for the world as he was already very old, how would Gaston d'Orleans reign as Emperor Consort? Assuming the Brazil can maintain her track record of stability and economic growth how high can the Brazilian Empire aspire too? Already by 1910 the Brazilian Navy was certainly the third strongest outside of Europe, would a more prosperous Brazil be able to exert real power during WWI?

I'm not sure if Gaston would do well as Emperor Consort, Pedro II didn't let him get involved in politics while he was prince consort. And I'm not sure about matters of economic growth through the empire and republic, and am not sure about differences in economic growth, however the end of the empire saw the rise of the Cafe com Leite and the rule of the oligarchy to a high degree so avoiding would probably be beneficial to economic growth. In regards to WWI i doubt Brazil would try to influence it, even if better than OTL, WWI was almost exclusively an European affair and Brazil would not get involved in it unless the circumstances that led to it's involvement in it OTL happened ITTL again.
Brazil without the republic would not fall into the oligarchy and regionalism that befell it OTL, however at the same time Brazil without the republic is also Brazil without the Vargas period and his industrialization programs, at the same if the rural oligarchies don't come to power, establishing industry before Vargas is also possible, all that the empire needs is somebody willing to do it, as Brazil probably had the capital in the rubber boom to proceed industrialization.
Frankly it all depends of who come to power in case of the republic coup d'etat failing, if it's Gaston, then as a military man and supposed philanthropist he could possibly modernize the country reasonably and develop a local industry. Also, while I'm not sure of the authenticity of this, i have read that Gaston was sought by an major the day before the coup but thought the matter inconsequential and did not meet with him, he later postulated that the man wanted to warn him about the coup.
