What if the Baltic States had refused to be annexed?

Wrote a one-shot TL on this scenario here.

Long story short - they lose, very quickly, they are then suppressed even more than in OTL, but I believe they'd still be able to restore their independence once the USSR starts to collapse.

my question has always been if M-R Pact between Germany and USSR did not deal with Finland and Baltics, Germans had built pretty nice trading bloc for themselves (including Poland also) but dealt it away.

not really sure if Soviets would have signed deal that didn't "assign" them the Baltics? maybe, Lithuania was "given" to Germany at one stage?

as far as the three banding together to fight off Soviets? well ... they did not do that to resist Poland's ultimatum to Lithuania in 1938, and that would be considered a much lesser threat than USSR.

Soviets would have occupied the Baltics regardless. Germany might try to complain, sure, but Soviet resources were more important to them than three tiny nations, ones they were planning to retake anyway once they backstabbed the USSR.

well, o.k. ... the Soviets occupying the Baltics rolled everything up into nice package for Germany when they commenced invasion. my hypothetical scenario was IF they had never "assigned" Finland and Baltics to Soviet sphere of influence under Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact since the trade with them was so lucrative. (not "assign" them to Germany, just not deal with it in the pact)

(always think the Soviets could have been diverted south, a pact to divide Poland and Romania, since they were putative military allies, and held territory the Soviets grabbed in 1940 IOTL)
