What if the 1976 US Presidential election was an electoral tie?

I've always thought the whole US system is odd at best, completely broken at worst.

Only two viable parties, whoever has the majority in a state gets to appoint a number of representatives. Some states have more influence than others etc.

Why not simply go with 1-man, 1 vote. That's true democracy.

Well originally, the founding fathers worked hard to avoid true democracy...

Today, people from small states like the extra representation, even if the current system works against them, imo. I cant even convince my wife.:)

Thirdly, if it aint broke dont fix it. Passing a constitutional amendment is hard, and the current system almost always produces results very close to the popular vote numbers. Ie, i think theres only been twice where the ,wrong, candidate won and the vote wasnt really close.

Sure, gore won the popular vote, but it was like 50% to 49%, really close. And if a trivial handful of votes in florida had changed, been allowed, whatever, the ev would have matched the popular vote.

Do i think it SHOULD be changed? Do i think it will be? No, not any time soon. Theres little to no cconstituency for the change.

Had that Washington elector voted as he "should have voted," then, under this scenario, the EC vote would have been a 269 - 269 tie. The 95th Congress would atill have to elect the POTUS & VPOTUS.
Oops; I should've followed through with your math.

Technically, since the top three finishers go to the House, Reagan is eligible to be elected! :D

Not that this would ever happen. Though I wonder if it's possible, especially if say, Ford conceded after losing the popular vote, the idea of electing Reagan might gain steam in the House, enough to get maybe one or two states supporting him.
