What-if - The 1940 republican national Convention Bombing

According to this newspaper article http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...BAJ&pg=1758,1863043&dq=bomb+worlds-fair&hl=en, bombs were discovered in and around the site of the 1940 REpublican National Convention.

We can probably use handwvium to have whatever injuries we want, so let's say first taht only a few delegates are killed by a bomb. How does this change thigns. How do men such as Taft, an ardent isolationist, react? It appears from the article that Communists were behind it. This is the most likely scenario, as it's not as likely for major candidates to be injured.

However, suppose a number are, including Wilkie. What do the Republicans do? Dewe was the frontrunner, would he get the nod that early? There won't be enough sympathy vote to elect him, but it seems like they'd be more likely to go away from the isolationists.

It also probbly doesn't impact the war much - Pearl Harbor still happens, and even if there's a little less Lend-Lease going toward the Soviets, I can see Stalin being savvy enough to distance himself from the bombers to ensure there is Lend-Lease coming. Would it make Americans more wary after the war?

Dewey might be a little more paranoid- and get more support in 1948.

Then again, I wonder what would happen if Dewey were killed*- could Taft win in 1948?

*I do have a TL idea in which he's killed on orders of Dutch Schultz.
