Recent discussion about the Boston Braves reminded me that Williw Mays was found by them first, but the Giants outbid them. then, the Braves outhustled the Giants for Hank Aaron.
Either would make a great TL, and if I have time might give me one, but the main crux of this question is this, which could be a key point in either if I have time do either. (And anyone else is welcome to try it, too.)
Horace Stoneham, when he was going to move the Giants to San Francisco was lured to Candlestick Point on a day when it was surprisingly warm, at a time of day when it was really good, the early morning. By afternoon, it's common for the place to be really bad weather-wise. I still remember those ads in the mid-'80s mentioend on This Week In Baseball, IIRC, comparing fans to Siberian explorers, encouraging them to brave the elements.
The question is, what if Stoneham learns how bad that weather really is? he was lured there as the "perfect spot" but he could have found other places in San Fran or in the Bay Area in general. I think I read the mayor just wanted *someone* to build there becuase it wasn't good for a lot of other thigns. he could also have chosen a place just outside San Francisco, though I don't know how well-developed the suburbs were. He could have gone to Minnesota, though the league might not have approved the Dodgers' move then. Or, he coudl have taken O'Malley at his word, that he had the pick of the two, and chosen Los angeles. Though how likely that is, id on't know.
What do you all think?
