What if Sakamoto Ryōma survives assassination?

Sakamoto Ryōma, one of the architects of the Meiji restoration, was killed in 1867 by pro-Shogunate assassins, shortly before the final downfall of the Tokugawa Bakufu in the Boshin War the following year.

But what if he survives? What will be his role in Japan's new government?

He will probably become part of the Meiji oligarchy, hold government ministries and finally become a genrō.

True but I assumed he would take a classical path similar to the one taken by Meiji reformers such as Okubo Toshimichi.
