it was useful at the end of the war, when Iraq was defending it's own territory against Iranian attacks. When Iraq first attacked, they should have done several things differently, but competence wasn't a big thing among the Iraqi military leaders...But wasn't that strategy completely useless against Iran, considering that it was Iraq that was attacking Iran and so Iraq should have chosen offensive strategies to overcome its enemy.
That makes it sound like Saddam wasn't executing officers left and right.
Weren't they sanctioned by most states already at that point? Another matter is who would operate said equipment, the Shah's army was gutted by the revolution and the new recruits weren't sufficiently trained to readily engage in elaborate operations. Iran would have probably been best off remaining on the defensive after expelling the Iraqis, conserving what heavy equipment they still had while taking time to properly train the recruits.AIUI, Iraqi incompetence is a big chunk of the reason that Iran was able to drive them out. Having done so though, they might have done better to look for heavy weapons out on the international market
