What if Robert Bruce is selected as Scottish King instead of John Balliol?

How strong-willed is Robert Bruce compared to John Balioll. I mean, Balliol was strongarmed by Edward I into being a puppet. I honestly do not see anything different happening, unless Edward believed that Balliol was more pliable than Bruce in OTL.

It depends whether or not the Bruce obeys his Lord Paramount. If he does not then an English army will put down the rebellion earlier than on OTL.

Pretty much OTL with the roles reversed. Balliol was no push over but because he accepted the crown from Edward he lost some of his Scottish noble supporters, which made him more dependent on Edward and set off a vicious circle or becoming more and more of a puppet and less and less popular. Unless Bruce says no when offered the Crown I don't see how he can avoid the same fate, taking it from Edward will cause some of his supporters to desert him and Balliol will rebel meaning he'll have to go to Edward for help. Help which will come with strings attached. The only real question is whether Balliol would be as effective a rebel as Bruce was.

Which Robert Bruce?

The Bruce candidate who claimed the throne against John Balliol wasn't the future king, it was his octogenarian grandfather, another Robert. My guess is that he would have had a short peaceful reign with the dynastic challengers re-emerging after he died.

I think people tend to forget that it was the Bruces who invited Edward over to mediate the dispute in the first place, apparently expecting he would favor their claim. He didn't, and... well, things went south from there...
