What if Peru Had Invaded Chile in 1975?

The enormous amount of weaponry purchased by Peru caused a meeting between former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Chilean president, general and US-backed dictator Augusto Pinochet in 1976.[6] Velasco's military plan was to launch a massive sea, air, and land invasion against Chile. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Velasco_Alvarado

Many people do not know of the hostilities between Peru and Chile. To give a simple recap Chile fought a war with Peru. Peru lost the war and Chile annexed some very nice mineral rich lands from Peru and made Bolivia a landlocked country. Now Peru and Chile had very good relations when Salvador Allende came to power. In Peru we had a left wing Dictator and Chile a right winger.

As you can see Peru was clearly the aggressor because of the military strengths of the countries at the time Peru's military was much better. But I still wonder if with American supported Chile could win or create a stalemate war like Iran and Iraq. Without support from the US Peru would most likely win but with I wonder. Just a thought but it would've been a hell of a war if it had happened.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Velasco_Alvarado#cite_note-utexas-6

I believe you are wrong. The Soviets were selling weapons to peru for buy 2 or 3 for the price of one. This most likely would've resulted in a Peruvian victory. Plus with extra Soviet credits and help from Cuba then Peru would also expand their economy. And Chiles economy in 1975 was in tatters and the general populace was extremely angry with the junta. While in Peru the economy was doing much better, yes there was some high inflation and food shortages but undoubtedly with all the Soviet and Cuban support plus President Ford in 1975 abandoned South Vietnam to the North and had a very non intervention policy Perus problems would've practically disappeared. Plus while the US economy was going into recession the Soviets were having a huge increase in their own economy because of the oil embargo. Thus US intervention would probably have been looked down upon by the populace in the US so supporting any kind of proxy would be suicide for public opinion. This most likely would then result in a much more powerful modern day Peru and no internal conflict in the 80s or 90s.
