Operation Margarethe II

Operation Margarethe II was the name for a planned Nazi German invasion of Romania by German forces in conjunction with those of Hungary[5] should the Romanian government decide to surrender to the Soviets and the Romanian Government switched sides the first chance it had.[6][7][8] Romania did in fact surrender in August 1944 (after King Michael's Coup), but this operation was never implemented.[6][7][8]

What if the Germans got wind that Romania was going to switch sides and occupied the country with Hungary before that could happen?

They become even more thinly spread, and facing Romanian troops allowing Russians into the country means they take more losses and the front opens quickly.

my scenario is an earlier occupation of Romania https://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=330916 when they could actually accomplish the task (always considered an ASB or outlandish idea but not at the time)

consider that USSR, Hungary, and to lesser extent Bulgaria all had territorial claims against Romania, not to mention Iron Guard trying to mount coup.

end with German/Iron Guard-controlled rump state of Romania in Wallachia and Banat https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_regions_of_Romania#/media/File:Mihai_1600.png

as opposed to creating Frankenstein monster of huge Romanian army able to turn on its creator at exactly the moment they are unable to deal with it?
