What if Oman kept its empire together?

So here's an interesting idea, what if the Omani Empire had managed to stay together into the 20th century? Would such a thing have even been possible? Perhaps if there hadn't been so much squabbling among the Omani royal family it would have stayed together for at least a few more decades. Furthermore, what would be the fate of the empire's African subjects? Would they have eventually been granted citizenship and equal rights? Or would segregation be their fate? If the empire still existed today what would it look like? Personally, I think a Japan style westernization would be incredibly difficult for Oman, but not impossible with enough western support. I would think industrializing the African portion of the empire would be the most difficult.
