This is an interesting thought but it really belongs in ASB.

No it doesnt. Lets not call everything remotely improbable ASB. ASB means Alien Space Bats. Things that humanity could not possibly pull off or choose to do, like casting spells and moving continents. Everything that is merely related to human politics is anything BUT.

Its a bit of a pet peeve of mine, how every other somewhat unlikely scenario gets called ASB these days. Back then, this acronym used to mean something. :p

That's an interesting argument. I'll keep it in mind the next time I make a thread:)

Why wouldn't Kim simply take a page from Castro? Let a flood of refugees be your chance to get rid of all your dissidents and many of your criminals.

That's what I was thinking, too. A Korean Mariel Boatlift. It did help Castro. I would say it is somewhat unlikely, but then again, Cuba's actions in May 1980 weren't seen by anybody, either. As far as NK's propaganda, that's easy to explain, do it the same way Castro did - "They refuse to adapt to the spirit of our revolution. We don't want them, we don't need them."

Why not? They see them as brothers don't they. Of course if a sudden large flux of people cross the borders South Korea will keep a close eye on them, but I don't see them sending them back to the north.
For the most part, Southerners don't see those in the North as "brothers" by any measure. Though they certainly would jump at the chance for unification, its doubtful that the RoK would not see that the DPRK was likely also sending spies and/or saboteurs with the refugees. And if they didn't they'd think they were.
I'm not saying that if they North and South worked out some kind of deal for it to happen, it couldn't, it very well could. But the North doing so unilaterally would be unacceptable.
