I've been reading about the Lewis and Clark travels and they said that while on the reutrn route down the Missouri, they counted at least 150 persons (trappers, traders, etc...) making their way up the Missouri to exploit the lands natural resources like timber and furs. Also new towns had already been planted and this was only 2 years since they set out.

Also at the same time Jefferson was sending out other explorers.

So it seems to me that if say Lewis and Clarks expedition had failed, say they had gotten killed or something, it would not really have held off western exploration and expansion very much.

What do you all think?
