What if Nicholas II died in Otsu in 1891?

Would war break between Japan and Russia?
Grand Prince George Alexandrovich becomes Tsarevich, but we can assume that he would die in 1899 as OTL as he had bronchitis.
And if he is ill, would he reject to become tsar when his father dies in 1894?

So many butterflies would be injected into the TL to make a quick summary of what I think would happen impossible, but I am inclined to think that it would have been good for Russia.

Like no hemophiliac Alexis, no Romanov family massacre, no Rasputin and no Russian Civil War?

i woudnt say that....but it might change things enough that the romanovs arent deposed, but mabye forced into exile (without the majorty being killed) or becoming a constitucional monarchy with no power

Iirc it would be George until 1895, but Michael II would follow.

Somehow i dont think that Michael II would have avoided a revolution... He seemed to be more reasonable than his brother so i guess Rasputin would be another mad monk shouting in wilderness but-if i remember correctly-politically he was thinking like Nicholas II...
If WWI goes as per OTL and Michael II does better than Nicholas II he might have a chance to retain his throne (perhaps by allowing some constitutional reforms)

You can't project 20 years forward as if nothing is going to change.

George becomes Tsar, there would not be any doubt about that. His uncles would be the main power in the country anyway, and little would change.

Say George dies when he did in OTL, and Michael accedes. He's already seen his uncles run the country under George, and will have been involved as heir presumptive. Its likely he is able to assert his independence of action that much sooner, and as supreme authority he is able to contract a marriage of his own wishes, without as in OTL having his elder brother veto it.

Now its possible he won't meet Beatrice in the same way he did OTL, though he is related to her through the Edinburgh line so its probable he will. She's his cousin but this was no problem for most of European royalty, and he won't be blocking himself.

The question might be with regard to international relations - but here, you find that butterflies are playing havoc and what we need is a timeline and not a bash-it-out discussion!

Best Regards

Would Russia will go to war with Japan because of death of Nicholas?

This is Sarajevo-style situation.

It would be a major blunder and embarrasment for the Japanese, as the heir to the Russian throne will have been assassinated on Japanese soil, by a Japanese, with the Japanese authorities failing to protect him.

They would do all they could to prevent a war, with much bowing and scraping as a result. It might affect their policies towards China and Korea out of fear of provoking the Russians any further.

Not only that, a japanese police official, put there to protect the Tsarevich, killed him.
THAT would be very conspicous for Russia. Smoking gun even more than Black Hand...

IMO Michael would be a pretty good Czar. He had pretty liberal political views so serious reforms could be expected. He was also a headstrong person, so IMO he would have the courage to do right things.
