What if Mehmed The Conqueror is killed at the Siege of Belgrade in 1456?

Mehmed had taken the city of Constantinople just three years earlier, making the city his capital. Mehmed's supposed ally Đurađ Branković, the ruler of Serbia, was supposed to assist in the taking of Constantinople but had failed to do so. Branković also refused to pay tribute and so in 1454 the Ottomans invaded Serbia. Unable to swiftly subdue the country, Mehmed left Serbia to gather more troops, leaving behind a small force and instructions to avoid battle. The Ottoman's were unable to avoid a pitched battle and the Serbians where able to neutralize this force. In 1456 Mehmed again invaded Serbia, and quickly made their way to Belgrade. The Ottomans quickly put the town under siege and got through the first set of walls before being pushed back by the defenders. The next day a group of Serbian soldiers sallied out from the walls and began looting the Ottoman camp, cavalry was sent against them but in the confines of the camp they where not able to move and where pushed back. Seeing this more soldiers left the besieged city and began attacking the Ottomans. The Ottoman troops panicked and began fleeing and Mehmed moved in with his Janissaries to get control of the situation. Mehmed was wounded and forced to leave the battle, leaving the Serbians victorious.

What if Mehmed is killed in this engagement? Does the Ottoman Empire start crumbling before reaching its' potential? Not long after this battle the Ottomans would have to fight for control of Anatolia against the Aq Qoyunlu Confederation to the east? What do you think hapens to the Ottoman Empire and how does this change history for Europe and the middle East?

No the Ottomans do not start to crumble. Bayezid ascends the throne earlier. Considering the superiority of the Ottoman Army the Aq Qoyunlu can not match the Ottomans. A horse archer Army vs an Army experienced with gunpowder? I can tell who will win.

The conquest of Bosnia might be delayed as well as the conquest of Albania but Bayezid II won't be dealing with his brother(s) as he did in OTL. So between 1463 and 1512, roughly 49 years, Bayezid can fight more and conquer more. Assuming he dies as OTL. Needless to say the smaller states on the Ottoman Borders are still screwed.

Vlad Dracula ascends the Wallachian throne shortly after the battle and commences hostilities against the Ottomans straight away - only now, there is no Mehmed II to oppose him. Serbia also start moving back into its former territories; while Hungary is paralyzed by Hunyadi's death, but not for long.

The Ottoman Empire doesn't straight-up crumble, but things soon get very complicated and very dangerous. Bayezid is a child Sultan, with enemies gathering at his borders and a dangerously divided court elite reigning in his name. The Grand Vizier Zaganos-pasha is replaced by Mahmud pasha Angelos, or at the very least forced to share power with him. Mahmud-pasha Angelos then starts strongly considering whether he should convert (back) to Christianity and restore the Byzantine Empire, maybe with himself on top...

(This last part sounds outlandish, but Mahmud pasha was actually engaged in such a conspiracy in OTL. In this scenario, we can easily imagine him actually carrying it out and betraying the Sultan - with potentially huge consequences.)

Roughly how much territory would such an empire likely hold?

Maybe some of the North Anatolian coast if they're lucky, that region was still christian at the time.

If we're talking about the same region, that one was still under Christian rule in 1456 - the Empire of Trebizond wasn't destroyed yet and will stay around as its own separate state.

...come on people, Im a fan of Byzantine survival but this is ridicolous. The armed forces would never support it and if he cant magically pull out a really competent army from one of his sleeves he will be dealt with shortly.

I was speaking of the nicea region which formed the core of the post Latin empire Byzantium.
