What if Mehmed II managed to conquer Italy and rome?

What if he managed to take over the city of rome, and declare and rename the ottoman empire as the roman empire?

given that the Ottomans became the Roman Empire by taking Constantinople, what does he gain from taking Rome?

wasn't Mehmed II, during and after he took The City, considered by kings and nobles throughout Europe to be a normal European Monarch?

The Ottomans would probably have to create a Catholic Millet with Pope and all. The other Pope would have to set up court elsewhere. I suspect that Ottoman territories in Italy won't last long; but the impact of this on European development would be huge.

Do you think there would actually be a new Crusade formed, this time successfully? Previously attempts to revive the Crusades failed, but since this would pretty much send up major alarms throughout Europe...

This time it's the Ottomans who are coming from the other side of the sea.

If the Fall of Constantinople didn't accomplish this, I'm not sure how this would; it would be very difficult politically, and it's hard to imagine assembling an army that would be a match for the Ottoman army at this time.

It seems to me that it would be hard to get France and Spain to cooperate over this issue for fear of the other.
