What if Lucas decided to make five or six SW prequels instead of three?

What if Lucas felt like he was dealing with too many concepts and three movies would rush them, and decided after TPM to make four or five more films (instead of two more), with the extra films featuring the Clone Wars?

He effectively spaces major events like Anakin’s fall and romance with Padme out over more time, builds up Anakin’s relationship with Obi-Wan and the Jedi more, develops the Jedi, the Jedi Dogma and it’s short comings, and several Masters more, introduces Grevious and several other villains, etc...

Would this have helped or strengthened the movies?

The series would have been better off if one of the three prequels was about Han Solo. These stories must hook with the original Star Wars of 1977, so they are going to be constrained. That is the reason the prequels tend to get poor reviews.

An early document reveals that at some point in 1978, Lucas intended for ANH to be Episode VI. If he stuck with this and put "Episode VII" in ESB's crawl instead of "Episode V", we would have gotten 5 prequels.

I would have liked an additional prequel to show the formation of the Rebel Alliance.

The story might be better off if he did that but let's face it, Lucas simply isn't a good screenwriter and that fact is painfully obvious based on the prequel movies. He would have to get some collaborators involved to challenge his ideas and refine the scripts to make the stories better.

But what I think is most important is getting Lucas to get off his butt and film scenes outside and on location. The worst thing about the prequels is that almost everything is filmed on a tiny stage with green screens with the real work being done by legions of computer animators. It's bad for the actors and it's bad for the visual effects since you know everything is fake.

As a thoroughly unchallenged and lazy director Lucas making more movies the same way will still likely produce mediocre results.

Another point is that the story line for ANH had to be improvised because his real desire was to put modern high-tech special effects into Flash Gordon, but he couldn't get the license to do so. That franchise had a hero, a villain, a princess, a desert world, a jungle world, an ice world and a floating city. The success of Star Wars essentially makes the revival of Flash Gordon unmarketable. In 1974, a pornographic spoof called "Flesh Gordon" was released, a factor that made the owners very sensitive over their intellectual property.

There are many things that need to be done to fix the prequels and just having more of them just means that you will have more time for bad dialogue and plot.

If done right 4 or 5 would help but first you need to make the prequels actually FIT what was said in the original movies.

Anikan needs to be lat teens early 20s. He needs to be a pilot not a slave. And other various points.
Then you do the following
1) introduce everyone (very similar concept to A New Hope)
2) start training Anikan build up the relationship.
3) Jedi Skywalker starts to go bad and we get glimpses of Palpateen (spelling?) being evil and manipulating everything. Ends with the start of the clone wars.
4). The Clone Wars. Things start well for the Jedi but in the last scene Aniken goes evil.
5) Darth Vader tracks down and wipes out the Jedi. Yoda flees with the kids while Obiwan goes and confronts Vader. Movie ends eith Old Ben leaving Luke with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru who are Ben’s relatives or something.
