Perhaps if Neil Kinnock had run for the Labour leadership in 1980 instead of 1983, and won the leadership which I'm sure he would of as he was a popular figure within his party, do you think that Labour could have avoided the split of the SDP and come to power in the 1983 election?
Britain's electoral system is utterly corrupt, and was a disaster for a fledgling party like the SDP and Labour both. However, the views of the SDP's founders and the views of Kinnock were very similar, and he could have been a unifying force due to the fact he was popular on both the left and the right of the party in his early years. He was also a brilliant orator, and potentially could have had a real anti establishment, populist feel which was largely absent OTL due to when he came to power. He was a step to the right from Michael Foot, but from James Callahan he would have been a step to the left?
So, what do you think of this? What would he have been like as prime minister?
