What if: James M Cox elected President in 1920

I don't think Ive ever seen a thread on Mr. Cox, so lets open a discussion.

What if James Cox had defeated Warren G. Harding in the presidential election, other than having a stupid name, and looking like one of the most boring people in History, what would he have done as President? He was somewhat Conservative, but favored Civil Rights for Blacks, and favored the League of Nations. If we had a President who pushed for it, could the US be in the LON? Arguably, Cox would be President over a very prosperous era in the United States, so I'd say he gets reelected, and his VP Franklin Roosevelt :)eek:) in 1928. No mater what FDR does, the GD still happens, so he probably goes down in 1932 to ??????.
So, the Democrats are given the brunt of the Great Depression, how does that effect the Political alignment?

If I'm not mistaken Wilson pushed extremely hard for America to join the league of nations, and it was to no avail. That said Cox would probably have been a better president than harding, but the real trick is getting him elected.

I agree: its really one of most difficult things with a alternate president idea. How can you come up with point of diversion to off set such a big electoral lead? Close Elections you can speculate that the losing candiate could possibly win ex: 1992,2000,2004, and to some extent 2008. But how do manage a win for Mondale in 84? The question is to be sure interesting, but how do you get him elected is a tuffy.

got it, Nan Britton comes out with her affair with Harding with the daughter.

That would probably do it. It could make an interesting POD. So how does the presidency of James Cox affect the way the rest of the twentieth century pans out?
