What if Irish Home Rule comes in before the First World War?

The introduction of Irish Home Rule was delayed by obstruction by the House of Lords and the outbreak of the First World War resulting the Easter Rising, the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War.

Suppose the Asquith government had stood firmer and confronted the Unionists or the Liberal had supported home rule proposed home rule in 1906 or even earlier Joseph Chamberlain hadn't split the Liberal in the 1880s? That makes a POD around 1886 and one around 1906 at least.

What if home rule was achieved? What effect would it have had on the First World War or on the support for the Fenians? Would indpendence have come from an Irish assembly incrementally in the same way that De Valer
a began to sever the links of the Free State with the crown?

To get the Home Rule Bill passed you have to create a situation where in the House of Lords can be convinced to support it or a situation where they decide it's not in their benefit in trying to stop it. Neither I think are exactly easy at the dates you mentioned.

If it had happened around the 1906 time that you have suggested Carson is a full time Lawyer, Craig has only just become an MP, in 1886 they aren't even around.

Would a UVF be raised in the same manner? The senior officers which were at the core of the Curragh Mutiny wouldn't be in the same positions so their reaction might be different.

The butterflies from this would be fairly massive with possibly more troops from Ireland for example, and possible less garrison forces needed.

I think that some kind of exclusion had been agreed.

Antrim Armagh, Down and County Londonderry would opt out

Likely Fermanagh and Tyrone would vote narrowly to join the Home rule area

Off the top of my head the opting out was a third bill option. I don't recall it being an option for the earlier bills.

Quite right. You have to find a way to neuter the House of Lords if you want Home Rule prior to 1914 - even if there had been a 'deal' between Unionists and Liberals, I could totally see a 'ditcher' movement amongst Unionist peers a la 1911.

The most realistic way to neuter the House of Lords would be to have some form of POD in the early 1890s that allows Gladstone to go on the anti-House of Lords crusade he wanted to launch after the rejection of the 2nd Home Rule Bill, and have the crusade work - essentially, have the 1910 election(s) play out in the 1890s.
