What if Henry VIII executed Catherine of Aragon

Henry VIII didn't really start to lose the plot until 1536 or even 1538, when his favourite (eg, the one who got him a son;)) wife died. Besides, even at his most insane, Henry would never have tried to take on the Holy Roman Empire, Spain and possibly France at the same time. Also, Anne Boleyn had been tried for adultery and treason and found guilty, it is difficult to see how Henry could have faked evidence against a queen who had allies outside of the country.

Catherine of Aragon

She was a very popular queen. Executing her would have cost Henry considerable support and it may have even caused a revolt.

Those around him may have felt it necessary to slip a little something extra into Henry's next flagon of ale.

Besides, I don't see him doing it. He loved Catherine of Aragon once, and for a very long time. It was Anne Boleyn's brother's confession that doomed HER. After being tortured nearly to death, he confessed to incest. That charge was specifically designed to inflame Henry to murder.

Wait, what? I thought Henry was trying to make an excuse to get rid of Anne, in which case either the confession could have been faked or some other evidence manufactured.

I've always wondered about the whole affair. From my modern viewpoint it's hard to imagine people actually believing it. The past really is an alien world, isn't it?
