What if Henry the Third had not been killed?

Basically I was reading on Henry the Third of France, and it seems that he was about to establish his control over Paris, which would have given him control of the throne. I may wrong on some of this, but my question is if the assassin is caught and he isn't killed, what would happen in French history?

Henry III was a very intelligent man, and many of the traits of the Bourbon monarchy took root in his reforms or attempts of reform. Nonetheless, he was hated by almost everyone in France due to his middleground position, and, foremost, he had no children and no reasonable hope of having one. Even if he is not killed and manage to go through the civil war, his reign would only be a prelude to the Bourbon monarchy.
