What if: Harsher Treaty of Portsmouth (Russo-Japanese War)

I was wondering what would be the effects and what would be the catalyst for a Treaty of Portsmouth with the Russians loosing either more territory or being forced to pay reparations to the Government of Japan. In OTL Japan was also straining itself hard to fight this war and thus Russia had a big hand to play at the bargaining table even if there was unrest at home. How would it be possible for Russia to be in a position where they most likely have to bend to most if not all of the Japanese demands in what they wanted in the treaty? How would the US react? What would the Rest of the world do in such a situation? Thoughts?

Ramification #1, Russia refuses to sign. Japan has no means to continue the war beyond lobbing shells into Vladivostok during the ice free periods. #2, forty years later, Russia curbstomps Japan.

The Japanese are lucky they got what they did. They were on the verge of collapse and as for an indemnity, well, war would have been cheaper for Russia. Japan was broke and neither Britain nor the US really wanted to see Japan grow any stronger. They had achieved their objectives in curbing Russian growth

It wouldn't take that long. By September the Russian army commanders were assuring Nicholas of victory if they needed to restart the war
