What if George Washington ran for a third term?

True, but as far as I recall he died not of any chronic or age/stress-related health issues, but of a sickness.
Quite. One that he only contracted due to the time and place and routine -- were he in Philadelphia, he arguably would've survived 1799.

If you look at other modern democracies, the middle of a third term does seem to be the point where the public and party finally turn against even successful leaders: Thatcher, Blair, soon to be Merkel. The necessities of office means people take for granted the reasons they originally voted for you and the number you lose due to one policy that looms large for them individually builds up. It's very possible Washington loses his shine after a decade in power. That could mean no Adams Presidency to follow.
