One of the Roman historians, speaking of Britannia in the 2nd or 3rd Century mentions a people in the far north of the islands who lived in very primitive conditions (in caves IIRC) and spoke a language no one else understood, so there may have been a relict ice age hunter-gatherer tribe still in existance as late as Roman times.
