What if Michael Dukakis beat George HW Bush in the 1988 US election? How could this be done? Conventional wisdom is that Dukakis could have won and if he had run a better campaign and responded to Bush's attacks he would have emerged the winner. If he pointed out that the furlough program was based of a national furlough program under Reagan, that Massachusetts had one of the lowest crime rates in the nation and if he hadn't gotten on the tank he may have done better. But maybe with peace and prosperity under Reagan Bush was always going to win. In that case the PoD could be Greenspan's connections to the Lincoln Savings scandal are pushed two years earlier, meaning he is distrusted by investors and so Black Monday becomes a recession by Election Day. OTOH, Gore lost despite peace and prosperity under Clinton, so Dukakis coud have won, especially against a candidate like Bush. How would Dukakis do as President? Would he govern as a moderate, or a liberal? Was it too late to prevent liberal from becoming a four letter word and could Dukakis shift America more to the left from IOTL? How would he handle the early 1990s recession? How would he handle Iraq and the Gulf War? Would he win in 1992? What if?
