What if Crassus succeeded in his conquest of Mesopotamia?

What would have happened if Crassus managed to win the battle of Carhae and then took Mesopotamia from the Parthian Empire?

it probably would have prevented the civil war in the short term. it might have had a huge impact of on the Parthian Empire causing huge civil strife and Crassus may have kept on going and do an Alexander the great.

I think you vastly overestimate the abilities of Crassus...I doubt he will invade the Iranian Plateau and rather will focus on consolidating Mesopotamia and possibly Armenia (the latter as a client state)

Say Crassus dies of dysentery in Antioch or whatever and his son takes over, and being younger and less arrogant and sure of himself he pays more attention to his advisors'/generals advice, avoiding the OTL debacle. Whether that results in a failure, a raid, a conquest of mesopotamia proper or just the upper Tigris/Euphrates area, probably depends on how skilled and lucky he is, and how weak the parthans are. He is probably going to need some local allies as the Romans of this era (and generally) had a hard time dealing with cavalry heavy armies on foreign soil. Easiest way would probably be to pay some local nomads or something (though that runs the risk of them possibly turning claim, not guaranteed or necessarily likely but still a danger).

I am not especially knowledgeable about the era or the Parthoans generally so I can't comment on the specifics.

I think you're being a bit unfair on Crassus here. Whilst with hindsight we know his plan failed, it was in accord with how contemporary Roman generals usually fought their wars. See here for more details.

If Crassus was ever going to win against the Parthians, it certainly wouldn’t have been at Carrhae, that battle was lost before it even began.

In the event that Crassus won the campaign, he would have likely imposed his own pretender on the throne of Parthia, it was his original plan in OTL, except the pretender got killed before he could reach Crassus. He also would have probably established the province of Mesopotamia for prestige effect, but I doubt it would have been a lasting conquest for Rome. On the political side of things, Caesar would have his back pretty much covered, and he and Crassus would cut Pompey off once they both got back to Rome. A civil war would eventually come, but not in 48, plus, events and perhaps even protagonists would be greatly different from OTL.
