What if chrysler decided to keep Eagle

Problem was, most of it was rebadged or reworked Renaults.

Nobody really wanted that.

They ended the AMC Eagle almost as soon as the AMC buyout happened, the big mistake.

What Chrysler should have done, was to make the Eagle division the Luxury side of Jeep, keep Jeep with the CJ, and Cherokee, move the Grand Wagoneer over to Eagle Division, and keep making the 4X4 Eagle Wagons, but in 2dr and 4dr versions.

Chrysler had terrible luck selling pickups, so the old J Series from Jeep would not change that, as OTL, pickup sales would slide till they hit paydirt with the new Ram styling and Cummins Diesel power in 1994

I agree with marathag on this. Chrysler could have developed a modernized 4x4 or AWD system for the K platform and following systems as the Eagle lineup. Turn Eagle into a pseudo-GMC SUV lineup. An AWD turbo Neon would have been fun!!!

No, Jeep was the serious off-road brand. Eagle could target the soccer mom and part-time sportsman market. Also the snow belt commuter market, ala Subaru and Audi.
What are you talking about? Jeep targeted soccer moms before they even existed with the Wagoneer.

The AMC Eagle was based off of the 1970 Hornet. It was an ancient design that needed to be canned.

The Wagoneer was very rough for the suburban market, think first generation Chevy Suburban. Great for the farm or work crews. Less great for hauling little Billie around. The Chevy went through several generations of civilizing to get to today's vehicle.

The Hornet Eagle survived despite its ancient roots. My suggestion was to modernize the concept and integrating into the K-car and successor platforms. Think Omni/Horizon AWD. Daytona/Charger AWD. Chrysler LeBaron/Dodge Aries/400 station wagon w/AWD. Minivans w/AWD.

Wagoneer was even older, 1963 to 1991, with just very minor restyling.

Hornet was the right size, with new bits for drivetrain. The Hornet/Concord was very safe for the era, scoring well for the era, better than larger cars even

It's the right size for a small V8 RWD, and later AWD sedan or wagon

late '80s Thunderbird

while having similar legroom, but less headroom.

Now a new Honda Civic
Wheelbase 106.3 in

Couple more inches of legroom and that, FWD/Transverse engine helps interior space
