What if Chiang Kai-Shek had been a better strategist in 1940?

How could he have been a better strategist and leader of the KMT during the Second Sino-Japanese War? What were some options open to him to have ended the war with a better position?

Short term the Japanese, long-term the communists.

This thread is focused on historically what could have been better, not about ahistorical attempts. in theory, what could have been better?

Like Hendryk said in the other thread:

- The greatest and most pressing problem that Chiang Kai-shek faces is the fact that the Kuomintang's legitemacy is slowly being eroded away. To deal with this he needs to implement Land Reform and do it well. Corruption and the other major problems (logistics etc) also need to be urgently addressed.
