Despite the current South African mania of re-writing history, one of the main streets of Cape Town today is still named in honour of Charles Adderley. It was Adderley who successfully argued against the then Cape Colony becoming a penal colony: but what if he had lost the debate? In reality, the level of white immigration into Southern Africa never came close to that of Australia - but would it have made a difference had the Cape been a penal colony and there was more forced immigration?
What other implications might there have been? A sizable anti-British minority within the English-speaking white community, for example?
