What if Canada aligned with America under the revolution?

How would the Canadiens joining the Americans impinge the outcome of the revolution? How would USA and Canada be today? And if Canada were to join, for which reasons?

Im writing a school essay and 1/3 of it needs be about counterfactual history/alternate history, so would appreciate some good answers :)

Well getting what is now Canada to join the Revolution is fairly difficult, the French speaking peoples had no love for any English speakers at this point, much of it was underpopulated compared to the Thirteen Colonies and it was mostly only accessible by sea and river (the overland routes were either brutal or non-existent, see the attempted invasion of Quebec in 1775) and the British can easily control it from the seas.

The English speakers were not incredibly interested in the war and most wanted to be left out of it, and once more Loyalists started fleeing northward...well that's all she wrote for getting the Maritime colonies to join in. Though there was some sympathy for republicanism (and I think at least one uprising) the area is too easily dominated by the Royal Navy.

So, if something led to the Canadians being more interested in fighting, the British navy would have been able to crush them. However, I suppose the revolution supporters could have moved south. If the US later tried to take over Canada, the attempt would be more popular than the real-life invasions.

By the way, you're actually required to write alternate history? That's really interesting.

By "Canada" do you mean "Quebec", which is what the word meant then, or all the various and separate colonies that later joined to become modern Canada iOTL?

Your school is clearly awesome.

Here's a question which might possibly have a more interesting answer, though:
What if just one of the original Thirteen Colonies didn't join? Which one?

Maybe if you change the Quebec Act some how...

But that would require Parliament to shoot itself in the foot... not particularly likely.

What were Major General James Wolfe's plans for Quebec once it was conquered? If he hadn't died on the Plains of Abraham, would he have brought a more ... harsh... approach to administering the territory?
