In 1807 Aaron Burr was put on trial for treason. He had attempted to convinvce the western territories of the US to secede and form their own seprate country. What if Burr hadn't been caught? What if those western territories had listened to him and seceded? They most likely would have been a democracy, but it would have defeated the idea of democracy in general. It would have marked the failure of the "American Experimant" by proving those who claimed that, because there was always a losing side of a democracy. It would have prooved them right when they said that no nation in which so many people feel they should get to decide what their nation should do could ever manage to stay United. This would have greatly discouraged democracy and may have caused the main goverment system of the modern era to be somthing other then democracy.
